Michael P. Ryan CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®
Partner and Wealth Management Advisor
Mike’s interest in the financial world started at an early age. He loved the idea of helping people with their finances but more importantly, he wanted to help others achieve financial freedom. Mike’s career with Northwestern Mutual started out with an internship during his senior year at Stonehill College. After graduation in 2005, Mike was excited to officially start his career as a financial advisor.
After establishing his practice Mike decided to start Sankaty Wealth Management and build that business inside Northwestern Mutual. It was important to him to build a business that could bring more value to his clients than what he could do on his own. Mike has spent the last 18 years exhibiting incredible dedication to his business. He is continually learning how he can bring the most value to his clients and their families. He is committed to and passionate about helping his clients and their famailies achieve their personal and professional goals and dreams.
Mike is extraordinarily proud of the team he’s built at Sankaty. He loves being surrounded by hard working people who want to do whatever they can to help clients, while also growing the business. In Mike’s words “having an exceptional team, like the one we have at Sankaty, allows me to spend more time with clients, which is really what brings me the most joy…helping others see what’s possible in their lives.”
Mike believes that Sankaty is unlike other Wealth Management firms in that the team spends every hour of every day making sure that clients have the absolute best client experience. He is proud that Sankaty understands what their clients want to accomplish at work and at home and the team spends their time making sure those goals are achieved.
Mike believes that in order to be an exceptional wealth manager, you have to be willing to listen much more than you speak. You have to be able to hear what’s important to clients and then know the strategies that will help them get there. Mike considers the benefits of engaging with a financial planner to be extensive. He knows there is a good deal of technology available today, and that some financial planning can be automated; however, when you factor in the emotion that’s attached to someone’s money and then the behavioral aspects that evolve from that emotion, you just can’t replace an experienced wealth manager with a smartphone. Mike enjoys working with the emerging affluent and affluent and is extremely passionate in helping them achieve financial independence, spend their assets in a tax efficient manner, and achieve multi-generational wealth.
Mike is continually learning about the marketplace and ensuring he is up-to-date with any changes in the financial world. He is actively bringing ideas and strategies to his clients to help them be as tax efficient as possible, optimize their surplus, and to put the right dollars in the right spots for their future.
Sankaty clients lead busy lives and are exceptional at what they do for a living. They engage with Mike and Sankaty so they can spend their free time doing what they love…spending time with family and friends, as well as eliminating the stress of worrying if they are going to make a mistake with their families’ net worth. By working with Sankaty, clients are getting substantially more support, advice, and value than what they could achieve on their own - and Mike and his team are happy and honored to be there for them.
Mike grew up on Cape Cod and graduated from Stonehill College with a degree in Economics. During his college years, he also studied abroad at the University College of Dublin. After graduating from Stonehill, Mike continued his education at the American College, where he received his Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Chartered Life Underwriter, (CLU®) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) designations. Mike also has his FINRA Series 7, 6, and 63 registrations.
Mike currently resides in Cohasset, Massachusetts with his wife, Erin and their three daughters, Clare, Mairead, and Neala. When he isn’t spending time with his family, Mike enjoys playing golf, skiing, and seeing live music.
Christopher R Scearbo WMCP®
Partner and Wealth Management Advisor
Chris’ journey with Northwestern Mutual started in college; a time when most students are still trying to figure out what they want to do when they grow up. Chris’ experience has been a bit different in that he’s always known what he wanted to do, and he knew it revolved around helping people achieve financial freedom (no word on that whole "growing up" business yet).
As a college graduate, and starting his career as a Financial Advisor, Chris never imaged that in ten years’ time, he would be the CEO of a ten-person team. Chris is most proud of the culture he and his colleagues have created at Sankaty Wealth Management. He believes that Team Sankaty is wired to deliver -- to pay extreme attention to detail, and to bring massive value. Chris and his team have built and continue to grow upon their ability to be a top-tier firm in the wealth management space. In his words “we’re the real deal.”
Chris wants his clients to know that he and his team wake up every day, ready to serve. Chris operates his business with the mentality that there is a material difference between someone who simply helps manage your money, and someone who is willing to be a thought partner throughout your life. That’s exactly what Chris and the Sankaty team represent - money partners who are not sitting across the table form you, they’re sitting next to you. Chris fundamentally believes that money is meant to be used as a source of fuel to live life to the fullest. From his perspective, the highest form of wealth is to be able to do what you want, with who you want…and that requires very intentional planning.
Chris resides in Hingham, Massachusetts with his wife, Alissa, who he met in 2015 serving on a mission trip in Honduras. Chris and Alissa are the proud parents of daughter, Evelyn, and twins, Winston and Willow. Becoming a dad has inspired Chris in ways he never thought possible. The responsibility he feels for his children’s future and well-being has only reinforced his passion for helping others understand the power and security that are afforded through thoughtful financial planning.
Chris and Alissa enjoy traveling across the world to foodie towns and tasting the best each city has to offer. New England is certainly a region for the seasons and Chris loves taking advantage of the seasonal activities his beautiful state has to offer. In the winter, he loves to hit the slopes (Ski the East, baby) and in the summer, he enjoys playing golf (i.e. feeding golf balls to the tree-line one ball at a time).
Chris is one of two founding members of Sankaty Wealth Management, a boutique wealth management and financial planning practice in the Boston area; backed by the parent company Northwestern Mutual, one of the largest broker-dealers in the industry. Although his expertise is not limited to one set profession, career, or lifestyle – he finds that his typical clientele consists of younger, affluent families, with complex financial planning needs. They struggle with thoughtful financial planning, not necessarily due to a lack of knowledge, but rather because they lack the time and the bandwidth to be able to think about these things on the active and consistent basis necessary for financial success. At Sankaty, we make complex and comprehensive planning simple.
Chris’ Typical Clients Are:
Directors, VPs, and key level executives, who work at biotech and pharmaceutical companies that have a significant amount of employer equity. Oftentimes, these individuals are highly compensated through:
- RSU/RSA;
- stock options (NQ and ISO);
- and they have the ability to purchase employer equity through an ESPP plan and inside of their 401(k).
These individuals often carry a high level of financial intelligence and are looking for sophisticated investment and tax diversification strategies as it relates to their financial planning.
Sales Professionals, who are highly compensated sales executives working for software, tech, cybersecurity, medical device, and pharma companies. They are:
- capped on how much they can fund into 401(k)s;
- ineligible to fund IRAs;
- and looking for strategic and tax-efficient ways to grow their long-term wealth.
Young families and new parents, who are in need of the essential foundational planning to support their lifestyle for the long-term, like planning for college or preparing for their first home purchase. As a younger family man myself and having just welcomed our first child in 2019, I personally understand the importance of thoughtful financial planning as it pertains to providing security for your family.
